The Keyte-Ostens Besiege beer was first brewed in 2004 to commemorate the Siege of Ostend (1601-1604), on the initiative of the Zythos association De Oostendse Bierjutters. In the 16th century, a hopless Keyte was already brewed, which was drunk instead of the often contaminated water. The name Keyte (coyte, kuit, keite, kueyt,..) is derived from the French cuire or prendre une cuite, which means to get above your tea water.
